Strolling around Sitges, it is inevitable to find ostentatious modernist or neoclassical houses impregnated with the Cuban essence of the eighteenth century. An architectural style that beautifies the streets of Sitges and awakens the curiosity of many.
But ... what has Sitges in common with Cuba?
When the Free Trade with America Act of 1778 came into force, decreed by King Carlos III, many young people from Sitges traveled to Cuba and other Spanish colonies with the intention of making a fortune.
Some succeeded in creating their own businesses and made great fortunes. Known as "Indians" or "Americans", at the outbreak of the Cuban war, many of them returned to become the new bourgeois class of Sitges. And that's when they built the luxurious houses and mansions that give Sitges that special touch that mixes the essence of the Mediterranean with the Caribbean in a harmony that makes Sitges a unique city.
