Surely all the children of Catalonia are looking forward to arrive Christmas Day when Tió will shit their gifts, but this was not always the case ... A lot of years ago, this celebration was very different, it consisted in a ritual to bring abundance and prosperity to home in winter. The trunk called Tió was, formerly, a robust trunk that families burned in their homes from Christmas to Kings. With their fire they cooked sweets that they ate celebrating the Christmas Holidays, which is why today it continue shitting sweets in many homes. At the end of the festivities, the remains were kept as a protective amulet in a corner of the house or the ashes were scattered throughout the fields so that the harvest would be more abundant.
To increase the effectiveness of the Tió, many families, days before Christmas, made offerings of food and wine, a tradition that is still very much alive today. The youngest ones already know well that as more Tió eats, more Tió shits;)
