The old cemetery of Sitges, located in the Sant Sebastià area, is an authentic modernist jewel that allows us to admire a magnificent example of funerary sculpture from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with works by great sculptors such as Josep Llimona, Pere Jou, Marés and Vallmitjana, among others.
This is because, during the 19th century, many young people from Sitges traveled to Cuba and other Spanish colonies with the intention of making their fortune. Some succeeded, created companies and returned with great fortunes that allowed them to build ostentatious mansions and, also, imposing pantheons with sculptures by the best-known artists of the time.
