Les Botigues de Sitges contains an exciting history full of curiosities. Here we tell you what we have been able to find out, if you are knowledgeable about its history, do not hesitate to contact us to extend this interesting information.

Les Botigues de Sitges is made up of few urbanizations: the Platja de Les Botigues, Rat-penat, Garraf II and Vallbona. Its marina, Port Ginesta, is the largest in Catalonia. This port together with the ports of Aiguadolç and Garraf make Sitges the only town in Spain that has three marinas.

Its origins date back to the 12th century, when this territory between Aiguadolç and Cova Fumada belonged to the monastery of San Vicenç del Garraf. In 1163 King Alfonso II of Aragon donated the territory for the foundation of a priory. Some sources consider that the current farm of Can Lluçà was the site of the monastery. In 1413 the last prior donated it to the Pia Almoina of Barcelona for fear of incursions by pirates. This linked the territory of the Botigues to the town of Sitges, given that La Pía Almoina was already the feudal lady of Sitges since 1342 and of Campdàsens and Garraf since 1394.

But where does the name of Les Botigues come from?

The fishermen kept their gear and fishing tools in small barracks that were called Botigues, in this case, located right in the area where we currently find Port Ginesta. Being the Botigues of the fishermen of Sitges, the area was baptized with the name of Les Botigues de Sitges.
